Michael claims Kathleen knew of and approved of his interest in men - an interest that may be more than casual internet exploration. Hardin and Black contend that Kathleen found gay pornography on Michael’s computer, and that during a fight he killed her. Hardin is assisted by Freda Black (Parker Posey, absolutely perfect as a certain type of Southern woman who can stare over the glasses perched at the tip of her nose with a look so dismissive and withering it could curdle milk). Prosecutors discover that Peterson is bisexual, which forms the foundation of their case. During the campaign he went hard after the man who would eventually prosecute him, Jim Hardin (Cullen Moss), which also does him no favors. A run for Durham City Council revealed that he lied about receiving a Purple Heart in Vietnam, which didn’t exactly endear him to voters. Michael, it turns out, has long been somewhat slippery about the details of his life, something Firth embodies with every word, every gesture. They arrest him and charge him with Kathleen’s murder. That starts with Colin Firth as Peterson, an ex-Marine and successful writer in Durham, North Carolina. But a lot also has to do with Antonio Campos, the director (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”) who created the series and the cast, which is uniformly outstanding. Some of that is the story, which is downright weird. True-crime mania has spread like a pestilence, but this is the best the genre has to offer. Well, here’s a short overview of personal favorites within gay cinema of the 2010’s, followed by some anticipated LGBT-themed films in 2016.Absolutely. The former an instant classic, the latter a drag. Two French queer films, albeit totally different from one another, which gained quite some attention and praise. When French gay thriller L’inconnu du Lac was released in Dutch cinemas it made me come up with a list of the best LGBT films I’ve seen this decade. But since everyone’s doing it… these are the most interesting, gripping, funny movies that are in some way ‘gay-themed’.
